The Citadel of Herat is a historical fortress in Herat, Afghanistan. It was built by Alexander the Great in 330 BC. It is known as the Citadel of Alexander, also known as Qala Iktyaruddin in the local people. It was the headquarters of many empires in the last 2,000 years.



About 1,100 items from the Herat region are stored inside the museum at the citadel, and was destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries.


The citadel of Herat was completely renovated between 2006 and 2011.
